Lanny Barnes nominates her twin sister, Tracy Barnes

How does one begin to put into words and describe incredible sacrifice? What would you be willing to do for a shot at going to the Olympics? I know for many people, they would sacrifice just about anything.

On the other hand, what would you be willing to do for someone you love? What if you made it to the Olympics, would you give it up for someone else? Would you be willing to give up a dream you had and have been working on for over 15 years?

This is a story about making it to the Olympics but giving up the opportunity so someone else can go. That is what my twin sister did for me. She made what I believe is the ultimate sacrifice and gave me a second chance at my dreams despite giving up hers.

I fell very ill during the Olympic trials for biathlon and wasn’t able to complete all the races to qualify for the team. My twin sister, Tracy, raced well and made it on the final roster for the 2014 U.S. Biathlon Olympic Team. Even though she had competed in the 2006 Olympics, she just barely missed making the 2010 team.

After another four years of brutally hard work she made what would probably be her last Olympic team, but turned right around and gave that spot to me.

“She is my hero and I can’t think of a better example of Olympic spirit and selfless dedication to another person and to the Olympic movement. That is why I nominate my twin sister Tracy as the most inspirational person in my life. She has not only given me a second chance, but double the motivation.”
